Michelin has launched the XDR Wide Body Truck, its first tyre developed specifically for wide body trucks, a vehicle segment gaining ground in mining operations.

New Michelin Tyre for Mining Operations

Designed for demanding mining and quarrying environments, the Michelin XDR Wide Body Truck is designed to handle heavy loads and sustained speeds while providing puncture resistance and long service life.

Kevin Maleterre, Director of Michelin Beyond Road, says: “Wide body trucks are playing an increasingly important role in mining operations. With the Michelin XDR Wide Body Truck, we are applying our expertise in mining applications to this new generation of vehicles, with a clear aim: to help our customers combine safety, productivity and the development of their fleets.”

The tyre features a casing reinforced with thick steel cords to help withstand demanding operating conditions and reduce the risk of tyre failure. Michelin recommends a load capacity of 12 tonnes per tyre at an inflation pressure of 9 bar (130 psi), which is lower than pressures typically used in this segment.

Wide body trucks offer a balance between payload capacity, safety and acquisition cost, contributing to their growing adoption in mining. Michelin developed the new tyre in less than two years following field analysis and assessments of customer requirements.

The Michelin XDR Wide Body Truck is designed for intensive duty cycles, with a tread compound designed to resist damage and provide traction on soft or muddy ground, aiming to help reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs while improving vehicle availability and supporting lower total cost of ownership.

The tyre will initially be available worldwide in size 16.00 R25 from 1 November 2026, with additional sizes planned for the future.
