Remondis Südwestfalen GmbH, a municipal and commercial waste management company has set a good example at its headquarters in Soest, Germany, by having sustainability as the main objective.
Remondis Delighted with Continental Service
“As part of its focus on environmentally friendly fleet management, Remondis uses Continental’s Conti360° Solutions service package, including premium tyres, ContiConnect digital tyre management and hot retread tyres,” explains Annika Lorenz, Head of Continental’s fleet management team for the aftermarket tyre business in Germany.
“A digitised fleet allows maintenance and revisions to be planned in advance, and that makes it an effective tool to reduce CO2 emissions and take care of resources.”
For clients like Remondis, these are areas that can make a difference on a day-to-day basis. “We benefit from increased fleet efficiency, a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10% and an increase in tyre mileage,” explains Gerhard Pomberg, Logistics Operations Manager at Remondis in Soest. “We are showing that profitability and sustainability go hand in hand, while serving customers and helping them become more sustainable,” he adds.
ContiConnect Increases the Operational Reliability of the Fleet
The Remondis Group branch in Oelde (Germany) has played a pioneering role for the company. In March 2020, workshop manager Thomas Feldhaus equipped his fleet with the ContiConnect tyre pressure monitoring system. “Feldhaus told me about ContiConnect and I was soon convinced of its potential to improve our tyre management,” explains Pomberg. “With our commercial vehicles, which service waste management companies in particular, we see puncture damage almost daily.”
As of May 2021, more than 40 vehicles at the Remondis headquarters in Soest have been equipped with ContiConnect sensors. Tyre damage is now identified before it can cause punctures on the road; “The system is really fast. I have tyre data in just 30 seconds and I can change damaged tyres right there in our workshop.”
Digital Tyre Management: Part of a Green Approach to Fleet Management
The ContiConnect digital tyre pressure monitoring system contributes to making Remondis’ waste management logistics more sustainable. “We have put in place a constant pressure monitoring system for all tires, even on our trailers,” says Pomberg. “This saves fuel and reduces CO2 emissions, relieves tyre loads, prevents flats and helps increase tyre mileage.” In the space of a year, about six punctures have been avoided on the road.
One-sided wear and punctual tread wear are also a thing of the past. The carcass remains intact and the tyre can be retreaded. “ContiConnect is excellent. It is clearly structured, intuitive to use and cost neutral, and the sensors last a long time.” It only took 12 months to pay off the purchase costs thanks to fuel savings and reduced puncture costs.
The Comprehensive Solution Includes Retreaded Tyres
In addition to enjoying the benefits of ContiConnect, the Remondis branch in Soest also relies on ContiLifeCycle as part of the comprehensive Conti360° Solutions fleet package. Tyre partner Vergölst supplies the fleet with both durable and fuel-saving new tyres and hot-retreaded tyres from the ContiRe range. “We use the retreaded tyres on the drive axles and we are very happy with their performance,” says Pomberg.
On Vergölst‘s recommendation, Remondis is currently testing the Bandvulc Wastemaster retread tyre, created specifically for urban areas. Continental’s tyre experts have developed these high-quality tyres, which have reinforced sidewalls for protection against curbs, especially for the demanding conditions in which waste management vehicles have to work daily. The use of hot retread tyres with a recycling rate of up to 70% of the tyre material is in line with Remondis’ corporate philosophy and also serves its sustainability goals.
ContiConnect: your role in sustainable logistics 4.0
Sustainability is a key issue for Remondis. “We want to set a good example for our customers,” says Pomberg. Digitisation and transformation are central themes in this regard. For example, the company has recently decided to invest in an additional system that automatically reports the fill level of the containers. “The goal is to make better use of the capacity of the waste containers, to only really empty them when they are completely full and thus avoid unnecessary trips,” adds Pomberg. The company also has an on-board system that ensures drivers use vehicles more economically. Bonuses and driver training contribute to a progressive and environmentally friendly driving style.
The Remondis headquarters in Soest shows how Continental is working with its customers to implement green fleet management systems. “We see ourselves as helping to shed light on how circular economy measures can improve climate protection, and we are ready to help our customers grow their businesses more sustainably as well,” says Pomberg. “Continental’s service package comprising premium tyres, digital solutions and ContiLifeCycle makes perfect sense to us.”
