Oak Tyres Working Towards Sustainability Targets through Ecologi Partnership

The focus on making the automotive industry greener is a high priority for brands and manufacturers. This month, SMMT research unveiled the UK automotive’s production carbon footprint has shrunk to its lowest level on record, as CO2 emissions fell -11.2% in 2021, which demonstrates the steps the industry is taking.

Oak Tyres Planning to Become “Climate Positive Tyre Wholesaler”

Sustainability is an area tyre manufacturers are also making progress in. In 2021, Oak Tyres set out to become the first climate positive tyre wholesaler with a goal to offset 3,000 tonnes of carbon produced by its van fleet within 12 months. The wholesaler continues to work towards this goal, supported by environmental organisation, Ecologi.

Oak Tyres originally founded in Liverpool, has been around for over 40 years and currently offers a range of brands including Davanti Tyres, Landsail, Evergreen, Delinte and Aptany. The wholesaler has 450,000 sq ft of warehouse space across sites in Haydock, St Helens, Trafford Park, Leeds and Washington.

As it stands, Oak Tyres has planted over 30,000 trees globally and offset nearly 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions – the equivalent of 1,381 flights or 4,465,800 miles in a car – in its continued journey to becoming the first climate positive tyre wholesaler.

The tyre wholesaler’s positive steps have helped to fund environmental projects across the globe. These projects include supporting the construction of small scale wind farms in India, which produce emission reductions of around 14,000 tonnes of carbon per year, and protection of lowland peat forests in Indonesia, which absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide, helping tackle climate change.

Peter Cross, Oak Tyres’ Commercial Manager, said: “It is great to see the progress and impact we are making with our partnership with Ecologi. We are now only 1,000 tonnes of carbon off our first target and look forward to hitting that milestone in the near future, on our continued journey to become the first climate positive tyre wholesaler.

“We are pleased to be closing in on the target and to play a part in some great projects within just the first 12 months. We’re proud to be involved in making positive environmental changes.”

As the industry – and the world – continue to focus on sustainability, it is great to see the steps that are being made by brands in the automotive industry.
