CV SHOW REVIEW
Double Coin Success for Kirkby Tyres
Liverpool based Kirkby Tyres has been UK and Irish sole importer of Double Coin for more than 20 years, selling over one million tyres to date. Operating from a five acre districution centre in Liverpool and with warehousing in
Dublin, Kirkby is able to supply the whole of the UK and Irish market on a next day delivery basis.
The company recently attended the Commercial Vehicle show in Birmingham, where the Double coin brand had a strong profile.
Kirkby Tyres’ Double
Coin sales specialist Ben Santhouse commented “The level of interest in the Double Coin range of TBR tyres was unprecedented and far exceeded our expectations.” He added, “People are becoming more aware of the true value that Double Coin offers over its competition. There are not many manufacturers that can boast the range and still keep to the core values of quality and performance, if you couple this
with the ability to re-groove and re- mould the casings; it is an outstanding product.”
According to the company, real interest was experienced by the staff working the Double Coin
stand, and numerous positive reports were received regarding the value that the tyres offer in comparison to premium equivalents and the high level of customer service received through Kirkby Tyres’ national dealer network. The Double Coin range runs from 15” all the way up to 24” in truck and 49” in earthmover, giving Double Coin one
of the most comprehensive ranges by any manufacturer. As a brand, Double Coin is the first choice for some of the largest OE trailer manufacturers in Europe and the USA.
Kirkby Tyres, as one of the most comprehensive full line wholesalers in the UK and Ireland, offers consistent and reliable levels of supply through its core network of over 4,500 authorised tyre outlets.
indefinitely. Made from long-lasting automotive engineering grade material, the Safetytrim system is cold resistant to -40°C and heat resistant to +220°C.
The Safetytrim concept was originally conceived in response to the growing
range to supply Heavy Goods Vehicles and passenger carrying buses and coaches.
Most recently, the London Fire Brigade has selected the Safetytrim wheel nut management system to address potential wheel nut detorque
demand for wheel safety and anything that could mitigate dangers to road users. Ford Motor
Company adopted the idea and sponsored much of the early research and development. With over three million registered vans on the road
in the UK the initial target market was Light Goods Vehicles, primarily vans. Light Commercial Vehicles still remain a key market for Safetytrim but the company has broadened its
across their fleet of vehicles.
Ian Barbour, Safetytrim’s Managing Director, has this to say: “Wheel nut safety is an issue that affects all industries. With Safetytrim, the early identification of wheel nut de-torque will help reduce the chance of wheel loss. We are glad that the LFB and others have chosen to use Safetytrim to complement their preventative maintenance programme. ”

Wear Analsis
Distributed by RL Automotive of Didcot, the TAC-Scan is a laser measurement device suitable for cars, vans and trucks/buses, which accurately measures tyre tread depth and wear, allowing tyre maintenance staff and fleet managers to produce accurate tyre management audits as well as action reports.
According to RL Automotive’s Commercial Director, Nigel Blackwell, the TAC-Scan utilises unique laser technology to scan the tyre, providing a quantatative measurement of tyre tread depth and wear to an accuracy of 0.1mm. The machine is able to produce a complete report within seconds.
Picking up inflation issues (via a USB pressure probe) as well as potential alignment problems, the software allows the operator to print a report from the scanner itself or to export the data via a memory stick or wireless connection into management
software.
Utilising a Class II laser (less than 1 mW), the TAC-Scan can scan a tyre up to 385mm in width in 5 seconds, taking a reading every 0.5mm. The system has the capacity to store data on 1000 vehicles and can carry out more than 800 scans on a full charge. The machine is also highly portable, the F-1 version weighing only 6kg.
The TAC-Scan is available in five different versions, the F-1 floor standing version, the H-1 hand held version, the W-1 and W-2 versions for casings and the DO- 1 Drive-Over version.
On prominent display at the CV Show was the Safetytrim wheel nut management system, claimed to be the only such product that visibly indicates that there is a loose wheel nut and, more importantly, holds that nut in place, preventing wheel nuts and wheels from detaching from vehicles.
It also protects wheel nuts from the elements reducing corrosion and seizure as well as covering sharp, gnarled edges, reducing the risk of
third party and/or driver injury. When a wheel nut de-torques a yellow indicator appears in a viewing hole on the system next to the wheel nut. At the same time, the loose wheel nut is locked in place and prevented from further backing off and detaching.
The system is precision engineered to fit firmly onto wheel nuts simply by pressing it into place. It is easily removed with the help of a simple tool and can be used and re-fitted
