Italian Bus Segment Starts 2022 with a Significant Drop but Truck Sector Stays Stable

After a fortifying 2021, January has started off well for trucks and towed vehicles while buses sales have seen a fairly noticeable dip, in figures released by the Associazione Nazionale Filiera Industria Automobilistica (ANIFA).

January Marks Healthy Start for Truck Sector

In January 2022, there were 2,230 registrations for new trucks, which represented a 0.4% drop against the 2,238 units registered the previous January. For heavy trailers a total of 99 units were registered which constituted a 10.8% decrease, against 111 from January 2021. Semi-trailer registrations came in at 1,149 units which was 9.6% up compared to a year ago.

The North East region was the strongest for truck sales with a 15.1% increase, followed by the Central regions with 11.9%. On the other hand, the North West fell by 2.3%, whilst Southern Italy and the Islands fell by 14.5%.

For towed vehicles, the Central region saw a doubling of its share in January 2022, against 2021 with a 107.4% increase, while Southern Italy and the Islands saw a 12.6% increase. The North West and North East, however, saw a reversal of fortunes with 14.5% and 13.5% drops respectively. 

Buses Need Green Transition, Argues ANFIA

For buses, there were mixed results, with tourist buses, minibuses and schoolbuses recording increases. The reason for the overall drop in buses sales was due to the falls seen with urban and rural buses, which amounted to 74 and 89 units sold respectively, against the 176 and 160 registrations a year ago. In total, there were 301 registrations in January 2022 against 421 in January 2021.

Giovanni De Filippis, President of the Bus sector of ANFIA, said of the results that the need for a green transition is evident, where ‘public administrations should look to the bus sector with a view to an ecological transition.’
