Continental, Supplier of Tyres for DPD's First Electric Drive Truck in Switzerland

Continental Eco Tyre

Technology company Designwerk transformed a 19-metric-ton truck into an electrically-powered truck. Intended for regional transport in Switzerland, it has a range of more than 700 kilometres. Continental provided truck tyres from its Eco line with a special design that contributes to low rolling resistance and high mileage.

Continental Fits Electric Heavy-Duty Trucks

Continental is a supplier of tyres for the new Futuricum, an electrically powered truck developed from the Volvo FH model that Designwerk Products AG has converted to an electric motor. The Continental Eco tyre range has been approved for the steering, traction and trailer axles of the vehicle with which DPD Switzerland will deploy the 19 metric ton service for regional transport in Switzerland.

Continental's tyres were selected by the designers and the trucking company due to the combination of high mileage and low rolling resistance, two qualities important for cost reduction in the operation of electric commercial vehicles. All three companies are pioneers in environmentally friendly transport solutions, even for heavy duty trucks. "For many years, Continental has focused on developing products that help fleet operators reduce emissions from commercial vehicles," explains Andreas Schlenke, Continental's Tyre Development Engineer. “These technologies are now also crucial to increase the efficiency of electric trucks. We are delighted to be involved in this exciting project with our products.”

These truck tyres, characterised by their striking design, are part of the EcoRegional range. In addition to low rolling resistance and high mileage, they also provide short braking distances and a low level of rolling noise, properties also important for sustainable transport.

For the Hannover-based company, equipping the Futuricum truck model is not the first step towards electric commercial vehicle tyres. Continental previously presented a prototype electric truck tyre at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles edition. With the Urban HA3, the brand also offers a tire for electric city buses. Last year several tyre tests were carried out together with the Dutch electric bus manufacturer VDL Bus & Coach on the Contidrom test circuit.

The Swiss company Designwerk Products AG specialises in transforming trucks and vans to electric motors and in the manufacture of mobile chargers. Futuricum, the first fully electric heavy-duty truck, with a gross vehicle weight of 19 metric tons and a range of more than 700 kilometres, is currently in operation for DPD Switzerland.
