Michelin Switzerland and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility Start Partnership on Fuel Cell Trucks

Fuel Cell Trucks in the Alps

Long range, quick refueling and zero emissions while driving - while car manufacturers are increasingly relying on batteries as a replacement for fossil fuels, the focus for trucks is on fuel cells. Hyundai recognised hydrogen as an important component of sustainable mobility at an early stage and now sells emission-free commercial vehicles with fuel cell drives under the Swiss joint venture Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG. The Zurich-based company and Michelin Switzerland have now entered into a long-term partnership on tyre management for fuel cell trucks.

The core of the cooperation is the MICHELIN EFFITIRES tyre management program. EFFITIRES is part of the portfolio of Michelin Services & Solutions, a separate division of the Michelin Group that supports fleet managers with tailored mobility services, price-per-kilometer contracts and apps like MyInspection to make fleet management easier, more economical and more efficient. The efficient tyre and service concept includes the complete outsourcing of tyre management and provides for tyres with the  energy-efficient 315/70 R 22.5 MICHELIN X MULTI ENERGY for hydrogen trucks. The energy-efficient truck tyres for local and long-distance traffic have particularly low rolling resistance and thus enable fuel savings with high mileage. In addition, the EFFITIRES offer includes important components such as high service quality, reporting and increased mobility through regular checking and adjustment of the air pressure of the tyres used.

“Fleet operators often lack the time and opportunities to track their vehicles' tyre data. With Michelin Services & Solutions we have more than 1,150 employees worldwide, as well as specialised service centers and mobile workshops. With our digital offers and service solutions, we can precisely meet the requirements of our customers and providers of new mobility solutions” shared Albrecht von Leonhardi, Commercial Director for Michelin Services & Solutions DACH.

“We are pleased to have a strong partner at our side in Michelin who supports us in establishing commercial vehicles with fuel cell technology in delivery traffic. Thanks to MICHELIN tyres and the professional tyre management program, we can fully concentrate on our business. We trust Michelin's many years of experience in tyre management and are convinced that we have found the right partner because of the professional operational implementation” said Mark Freymüller, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility.

The first ten fuel cell trucks were fitted with MICHELIN tyres in September, and another 40 vehicles will follow by the end of the year.
