    In recent years, the structure of the distribution network for commercial vehicle tyres in the UK has changed substantially. It is not so many years ago that truck tyre sales and service were dominated by tyre manufacturer-owned distribution companies, commonly known as “equities” within the trade – ATS Euromaster, National Tyres,
Motorway, Hi-Q Tyreservices, Central Tyre – all manufacturer- owned and most of them offering national or quasi- national coverage.
Today, only the Michelin-owned ATS Euromaster can claim to possess true national strength in the sector –
indeed when you talk to others in the
sector, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a case of ATS v The Rest.
This market
scenario has led
to
opportunities
for the
independent sector in fleet tyre management. There has been a rapid growth in independent regional companies offering fleet tyre management packages. Companies such as DTM,
complete range of fleet management options.
On top of this the new tyre manufacturers continue to offer their own network of dealers
breakdown networks but there are other options available such as the Liverpool based Tyrenet and the NTDA’s breakdown network.
In this feature we look more closely are how these different types of operation present themselves to the market and what they can offer different types of fleet. We have interviews with Steve Richardson at Direct Tyre Management and Continental’s Fleet Sales Manager, Tony Stapleton. We look at the breakdown services offered by the ITDN and Tyrenet and the latest developments at Vacu-Lug and
